White Crow represents a change of approach for the multi-instrumentalist Portman. In addition to the solo guitar/Dobro/vocal soundscape, these new ensemble compositions incorporate his playing of other strings – violin, mandolin, and banjo. The music also contains a diverse array of styles, including British, Irish, and Eastern European folk, blues, and Americana. The album also finds him accompanied by pianist Maja Elliot, bassists Karl Clews and John O’Dwyer, flautist Smaragda Petridi, and vocalist Gosia Kamieniecka.
